Communication

Communication

The main focus of this page is to cover different types of communication that are present within a coaching context. Communication is the act of expressing one’s self in terms of the ideas, information, knowledge, thoughts as well as feelings.  Communication process requires both sending the message and receiving it. This applies to coaching mainly due to coach having to be able to both pass a message on to a player in a way that is effective and understood. Moreover it is important to receive messages that the players will give you, it is a vital aspect of communication because every player is different, therefore communication in a form of demonstration might be necessary in some cases.

Throughout the placement the main coach has used a variety of different communication techniques to ensure participant understanding. The use of demonstrations and instructions was the most commonly used types of communication and I felt like these were the effective ways of ensure understanding amongst the participants. (Rosenthal and Bandura,1978) researched that through demonstration participants are able to gain exact understanding of either the drill or an activity, as well as perform it in an identical way to that it was demonstrated to them. Moreover in accordance to the placement it has made the participants more connected to the session as well as enhanced their beliefs in their own abilities which was beneficial, as it allowed for a smooth session flow, as well as smooth transitions in between the activities.

Coach Philosophy

The coaches philosophy relied on asking questions to guide discovery, meant constructivist approach was more favoured by the coach. Constructivism places a signifcant emphasis on how individuals accrue and develop their knowledge and understanding through their refective participation in authentic situations and interactions with others (Light & Wallian, 2008).  I felt like it was beneficial in the context he the coach was delivering the session in because the session placed a lot of emphasis on understanding and being able to demonstrate.
